I saw her coming from a distance in her lovely fuschia coat, which she has paired with an earthy red scarf. The way the two colours smash together is deliciously twisted. This woman bought both her beret and coat in Paris, and I was delighted to hear that you can pick up fabulous silk scarves for next to nothing at train stations there.

This is the inimitable Barb Wood, whom I caught rushing between meetings looking so smashing. I know her by her artwork, but it’s the first time we’ve met. I love her beret, of course, and her brilliant blue leather gloves, but would you believe she even designed the umbrella? A refreshing lemony-twist of personality on a rainy day, just what I needed. “I like your hat,” I said. “It’s a beret,” he said, “…from France.” And I must admit I have never seen such a beautiful beret nor one worn so well as on this gentleman. He was arresting in his simplicity – the black jacket, black trousers, polished black shoes, white shirt, and of course, the piece de resistance, zee beret. I don’t usually do B&W of my subjects, but I just couldn’t help myself here; the aura of this man doesn’t need colour to shine. This photo takes me back to my days in Montmartre, where I lived on baguettes, wine, and amour… (ahem)
