Painterly Expression

I’ve always been drawn to worker apparel, especially paint-spattered trousers. These women had been painting at the Vancouver Art Gallery – the walls, I believe. The woman, right, said it took about a year to get her pants to this point (detail below). She also painted her runners pink and weathered them with work – walking abstract expressionism. I asked if they would ever wear these trousers as style choices: one said only if there was nothing else available and the other said no because they are associated too closely with work. I’m currently splattering my own pants to wear on the street with heels.

The Black Twill Kilt

I love a man in a skirt – or a pseudo-kilt in this case. This black kilt appears to be made of a heavy cotton twill accented with a V-pattern of decorative studs. This man has paired the piece wonderfully with a matching vest and a bright burgundy shirt and burgundy-flecked tie. I like the running shoes with the carrier bag as well. He bought this kilt online. Men, more kilts, please!

I style-eyed this man late last week and what struck me first about him were his plaid vest, striped bow tie, and red shoelaces – but upon closer inspection I was delighted to find the strings of a bolo tie hanging down behind the bow tie, a colourful beaded wristband, colourful rings, a leather key chain in his pocket, and pink socks. I love that tie-on-tie action! This man is from Japan and he is in Vancouver for his studies.
